Over Christmas my Dad and brother installed the leaning post we bought from Foursons marine. Here are the pics. They bedded the screws with 5200. Probably the best thing about the install was the legs hit the deck outside of the fuel hatch.

I called John at Foursons yesterday begging for a leaning post. He had four coming in and they are all accounted for.

He posted some here a while back and they were gone in no time. I was lucky to get one so I could remove the custom one I had built by Arctek on the boat I'm selling. He must have a wait list now as word is out. He did sell them rather cheap, but a quick nickel is better than a slow dime.

Looks great! John at Foursons is a wonderful resource for parts like that.

Just one question though. Do you think you may ever want to remove the leaning post for fuel tank repairs, deck painting, or??. 5200 is pretty extreme for this application.

Consider it there forever.

Annie2-
What would you recommend instead for a sealant?
3M 4200? 3M 101?

Looking for the next mako

3M 101 is what I use for bedding, which if I am correct is what should be used in this application.

5200 is a forever adhesive.4200 is less permanent , but is still an adhesive/sealant.

When mounting a leaning post or similar, I just want to create a seal between the surfaces and use screws to fasten.

I could be wrong, but i don't think so..

Bob,
I am glad you brought up the issue of using 5200. I remember reading in other topics on this forum about the various 3m sealent products and their uses. I just spent sometime reading the suggested uses of their products on the 3m website.

They suggest that 5200 should be used for a permanant bond just as you suggest and that 4200 might be good to use if you want to remove it someday.

However, practical experience using 5200 over the years tells me that 5200 is not permanant and that pieces or fittings attached with 5200 can be removed, it may require a little more work but they can be removed.

A small part of me thinks much of the preceived differences in the sealents is marketing although I have not used the 4200 or the other products much so I could be speaking out of turn.

I used 5200 on my leaning post and when I pulled it up to paint it the feet of the post pulled the gelcoat off, exposing mat. I was able to get it up though.[(#)]

nice post. Looks identical to my birdsall, except my seat is pleated.

You need the removable backrest now....trust me, you'll want it!

In regards to the amount of 5200 that was used in the installation, I used it on the holes that i pre-drilled as well as some on the threads of the screws. I then applied with my fingers around the base of each foot to assure that there was a good seal between each foot and the deck. If/when we pull it to re-finish the deck a knife should be able to cut the seal and the screws will be removed. I did not run a bead on the deck and set the feet on top so there isn't a large surface area that has 5200 on it.

I do believe that it is a birdsall post though.

Tuskan, I am not sure where foursons gets his posts. Ours has a sticker on it that says it was built by birdsall for Seacraft. I suspect that he is getting the posts from the Mako and Seacraft factory there in NC.

That's right. John said he is getting those from Mako and Seacraft warranty boats and surplus. There were a couple of different suppliers to the above, with most I saw there made by Birdsall. I bought a Birdsall from a Seacraft owner for my Hyrda Sports and it was an awesome seat with the storage under the seat, rod holders, etc.
