Transom Project 2

Page 6

I began the day by grinding the thin ply of plywood that was still covering the fiberglass. I used my Makita grinder with a 40 grit aluminum oxide disc. A good respirator and tyvec suit are a necessity for this operation.

The Starboard stringers are rock solid and dry, but the port stringers were full of worm dirt! They were both completely rotten for about 20", then the wood turned to wet wood. I'm not sure how far the wet wood goes, but I'm trying to find out without cutting away more floor.

In the photo below, you can see how the wood turns from black much to wet wood colored substance.

A reciprocating saw was used to cut back the stringers. Larger knees/braces will be placed after the transom is finished. I also began grinding off the remnants of the old inner skin and tabbing. There is a little more grinding to do, but I am getting close to being ready to begin replacing the core.
