Ron has laid out this plan of attack to refurbish/modify his new Mako

  • Work must be scheduled around fishing.

  • Modifications must be designed for fishing efficiency first, cosmetic secondly.

  • Maxamize storage, stumbling over a tackle box is worse than having to hand the rod around a post, especially in a 20' boat.

  • Design everything around the K.I.S.S. [keep it simple stupid] methodology.

  • Funds are limited, some trade offs may have to be made.

Here is Ron's Mako on the trailer. You can't tell much about it, but you can see that it has a bimini top (in bad shape). Someone added the top with little thought. There is a loran antenna on one side of the console, and an 8' VHF antenna one the other side. Neither can be set upright with the top up. The bimini top will be done away with. Ron will be adding a t-top later. A plan of attack on improvements is currently underway. As of now, there will be about ten phases to the operation.

Below is Ron's punch list. There is no particular order to this list. He has planned on initially accomplishing the projects that will make the boat and trailer usable, and working on all the other stuff when he can't get on the water.

  • Settle engine issue

  • Replace deck plates

  • build modified motor well

  • build soft top

  • install Garmin 188

  • install vhf radio and antenna

  • replace instruments and rewire

  • replace switch panel and rewire

  • install rod holders

  • install downrigger

  • install new trailer lights and rewire
  • replace upholstery
  • move battery [s] to console
  • tackle livewell issue
  • repair bow section [keel]
  • tackle anchor holder issue
  • recondition teak trim
  • modify scuppers
  • replace trailer tires
  • repair electric trailer brakes

Ron is open to any advice on all of the projects mentioned above. If you can offer him any tips or ideas which might help him to turn his new toy into the finest 20' Mako on the water, please drop him a line.
