I cut the stringers back about 6" from the outer skin for 2 reasons, the first is so I have a good place to tab the new core, and secondly so I could fit the grinder in there. I am in the process here of grinding off the old tabbing, but I am trying not to go too far. There is a lot of glass here, but my only intent is to smooth it out, not grind all the way down to the original hull. I got lucky on my stringers....only the last inch or so was rotten. The wood is wet, but should dry out over time. This will allow a nice scarf joint for the new knee braces which should be plenty strong. Have I mentioned how much dust I have made ???? YIKES!
